Asa Maxwell Thornton Farr Butterfield, known widely as Asa Butterfield, is an English actor who portrays Jacob Portman in the Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children film.

Life and Career[]

Asa was born on April 1, 1997 to Sam Butterfield and Jacqueline Farr in Islington, UK. He has a brother named Morgan and a sister named Loxie, and a younger half-sister named Marlie.

Asa's acting career began when he participated in a youth theater after school every Friday in his town at age 7. His first real roles were minor ones, such as Andrew in the 2006 TV movie After Thomas, a brethren boy in the 2007 movie Son of Rambow, and as Donny in Ashes to Ashes (2008).

The first major role Asa had was also in 2008, as the lead protagonist Bruno in The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, a Holocaust movie in which he played the son of a Nazi who befriends a boy imprisoned in a concentration camp behind his house. He was also in the episode "The Beginning of the End" of the TV show Merlin as a young druid boy with a death sentence the same year.

In 2010, Asa had a small part in the movie Wolfman and played Norman Green at age 12 in the movie Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang. His first lead role of this year was when he was cased in Marin Scorsese's Hugo as Hugo Cabret, based off the book The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick.

Acting career[]

Butterfield was cast as Jacob Portman alongside Eva Green as Miss Peregrine and Ella Purnell as Emma Bloom, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

Trivia[]

  • In 2013, Asa and his father created the app Racing Blind, a game in which the player must navigate through the different racetracks with their eyes closed.
