The Claywings were a group formed by Jack (Caul) and Myron Bentham.
History[]
Jack and Myron would learn many of the peculiar stories from the ymbrynes, including the Legend of the Lost Loop, which was a cover story for Abaton. For an unknown reason, Myron and Caul would leave the Ymbryne Academy, and would eventually come across the punishment loop Devil's Acre. Caul would get his brother to follow him because Caul claimed that they were going to do good things for peculiars. Caul and Myron would gather followers who were idealistic. Caul was one of the many who hated the fact that the peculiar world was run by ymbrynes, calling their influence infantilizing. Many peculiars in Devil's Acre shared his views; as such, he held meetings and made speeches to them, rallying them to his cause of taking control from the ymbrynes, and the Claywings grew in number. The group also wanted to have immortality without the aid of loops.
At some point, the Claywings would invent the Panloopticon and would place it inside a house. They would start collecting loops and putting them in the panilopticon. While they did want to help peculiars to a certain extent, the panloopticon would be a cover for the Claywings search for Abaton, which held the legendary Library of Souls.
| “ | They searched and searched for the lost loop, mounting expedition after expedition, each failure only fueling their zeal. All along, my brother had only cared about ruling it, like the would-be peculiar gods of old. And when I tried to challenge him and regain control of the inter-loop traveling machine I'd built, he smeared me as a traitor, turned the others against me, and locked me in a cell. | ” |

When Myron started questioning the ethics of the group, Caul betrayed him and spread rumors about his brother before eventually imprisoning him. Myron would slip the formula for a loop collapse to his guard, who told Caul. Eventually Caul used the formula in the infamous Experiment of 1908, causing most of the Claywings, who had gone with him, to become hollowgasts.[1] Most of the group were males, but there were a few females, with some being ymbrynes.
