Elmer is a male peculiar with an unknown peculiarity, though he may possibly be a diviner like many others in his loop. He is an inhabitant of the Portal, Georgia loop.
Background[]
According to Millard, Elmer fought in three wars over seventy years, including World War I. During this war he slept in a loop in Verdun trenches to prevent his aging forward.
A Map of Days[]
He appears at the dinner table in the Portal loop. He explains how they can have three-day-roasted lamb every day in a one-day loop, and wishes he can take the credit for it but that he had arrived in the loop long after, and all he does with the lamb is take it off the spit and cut it. Elmer continues to take occasional part in the conversation, mentioning how the wights are expert at disguise and that the hollow-hunters are heroes. He also points out the resemblance between Abraham and Jacob Portman, and asks Jacob and his friends how Abe is doing. Learning about Abe's death, he initiates a toast to him. When the conversation turns to V, he calls her quiet, and that he got the feeling that she might have been in charge despite appearing as Abe's protégé.
He states that there aren't many ymbrynes around in America, which is why their rules and codes are disregarded. During Miss Annie's telling of America's history with ymbrynes and loops, he speaks about the twentieth century, when the Organization began fading away because of the lack of ymbrynes to kill. He adds that they in America had heard a bit about the hollowgast fight in Europe, but that the hollows hadn't gone for America. However, it changed in the late fifties when wights and hollows did come. It put a stop to a lot of inter-clan battles but left peculiars unable to leave their loops much.
Elmer comes to see Jacob and his friends off when they leave, shaking their hands and telling them that they know where to find the loop if they ever need a diviner.
Appearance[]
When first introduced, Elmer wears a black suit and tie, which clashes with the apron he wears over it. The apron is decorated with the image of puckered lips and reads KISS THE COOK.
