Englebert is a male peculiar with the peculiarity of dislocating his head at will without hurting himself.
Tales of the Peculiar[]
The First Ymbryne[]
He meets Ymeene in a forest glade and sees her repeating small moments in time. As she does not have somewhere to go, he invites her to his camp full of other peculiars. He lives happily with the others until news arrive that the normals are planning to chase all the peculiars out of Oddfordshire completely, and he is at first opposed to fighting because the peculiars don't know how to fight. However, after he with everyone else is persuaded, Englebert and Ymeene disagree on whether to fight or not, leading Ymeene to decide to leave. She later comes back after seeing that there are far more normals coming to kill them than the peculiars were told, and Englebert hugs and stares at her for a while in order to remember her even after death.
After Ymeene discovers that she can delay everything by time-looping, Englebert is the first to keep her awake after she starts falling asleep. Eustace Corncrake keeps Englebert awake when he starts falling asleep as well. Ymeene soon makes the first twenty-four hour loop, but it is unable to hold the more than one hundred in it without making them all starve. Englebert speaks with Ymeene about it one night, and wishes that she could copy herself so that more loops could be made, giving Ymeene the idea to find other ymbrynes in the world. When she leaves, she puts Englebert in charge.
He appears to be one of the original peculiars Ymeene had saved still alive at the time of Ymeene's death, as it is to the best of his reckoning that they find the very tree she was born in to bury her.
Description[]
Appearance[]
Englebert is a young man wearing a short green tunic and shoes made of fish skin. He does not always keep his head on his neck, carrying it under his arm when he first meets Ymeene.
Personality[]
He is described as funny, and usually mild-mannered, so that it is a bit surprising that even he is persuaded to fight the persecuting normals. When deep in thought, he takes his head off his neck, puts it in his lap, and scratches the top with both hands.
He also had a keen scientific mind and made detailed notes of Ymeene's breakthroughs as she pioneered loopology.
Peculiarity[]
Englebert is a dissocio, having the ability to take his head off his neck and reattach it harmlessly.
Relationships[]
Ymeene[]
Englebert is the first peculiar Ymeene meets and the first friend she makes, and the one who first gives her somewhere to stay. They become close friends, and Ymeene trusts him enough to make him the one in charge when she leaves to look for other ymbrynes.
