|“||She's as close to royalty as we peculiars have. They tried for fifty years to elect her leader of the Council of Ymbrynes, but she would never give up teaching at the academy she and Miss Bunting founded. Today there's not an ymbryne worth her wings who didn't pass under Miss Avocet's tutelage at one time, myself included!||”|
Esmeralda Avocet (later spelled Esmerelda) was a female peculiar with the peculiarity of being an ymbryne. She and Miss Bunting had a loop together in Derbyshire on Saint Swithin's Day of 1867. Her loop was not just a typical haven for peculiars, but an academy for ymbrynes. The youngest student she ever took on was Alma LeFay Peregrine.
When wights and hollowgasts raided her loop, Miss Avocet fled to Miss Peregrine's loop to warn her. Her colleague was said to have been abducted. She is in a disgruntled state, unable to speak for some time. She and Miss Peregrine are later kidnapped in bird form and taken to Devil's Acre.
she and 11 other of her sisters weaved together a tempory lock for the loop to buy jacob and his friends more time on their quest to find the light eaters. near the end she gave nearly everything she had and then some when the dust settled she passed away in her slumber and along with V and one unnamed ymbryne were gathered to a special building for their funeral ceremony which includes calling thousands of songbirds to pick their bones clean then afterwards their grinded up into dust that will be used for its healing qualities for life as an ymbryne means complete selflessness even in death.
Physical and mental description
She is described to be elderly, frail and serious.
She is an ymbryne, which gives her the power to manipulate time and turn into a bird, specifically an avocet.
Miss Peregrine was one of Miss Avocet's students. Their relationship is said to be very close as all Ymbrynes are overly protective and maternal and will do anything at all costs to protect those in their care. Miss Avocet traveled to Miss Peregrine's loop to warn her about the wights and hollowgasts when loops was raided after her wards were killed. Miss Peregrine sees her perhaps as a maternal figure, and looks up to her, though it is unknown about Miss Avocet's direct feelings towards her.
