Tales of the Peculiar[]

The Boy Who Could Hold Back the Sea[]

Living in Ireland in the time of its famine, Fergus makes a promise to his dying mother to never tell others of his peculiarity, as it would only bring trouble to his life. He sets out toward the sea after her death and arrives in a town of wreckers. Fergus ends up displaying his talent and accidentally wrecks a ship, much to the delight of the wreckers. Fergus escapes into the ocean and gets pulled up into a greedy captain's ship, but has to work for him. The ship crashes into an iceberg, and while the captain and his own men escaped on the one lifeboat, Fergus keeps the ship upright long enough for the passengers to get onto the iceberg. He uses his ability once more to get them all and a bear fish, and the bear repays Fergus by keeping him and the passengers warm during the night. However, this brings them more bears, and eventually the fish supply just about runs out. They are rescued by a man from Pelt Island, with the passengers having turned on Fergus. A bitter Fergus resolves to keep his ability a secret from then on. But once he is needed once more to put out a fire, he does so, but lifts all the houses into the sea as well, angering the people once more.

Fergus makes the decision to live a life of solitude, and uses one of the houses he had swept into the ocean. After living for weeks in it, he comes across a ship with only a girl named Cesaria, who is his age, aboard. She reveals that she too is peculiar, and the pair stay together on her ship.

Peculiarity[]

Fergus has the ability to "harness the power of the currents and tides." He discovered this when he was young on a trip to the coast, but his ability does not extend to smaller bodies of water such as rivers and lakes.
