Tales of the Peculiar[]

Pre-Story[]

Liu Zhi was a famous ocean explorer, having "mapped the whole eastern coast of Africa, made contact with unknown tribes in New Guinea and Borneo, and staked claim to extensive new territories for the empire. Along the way he had fought pirates and brigands, quelled a mutiny, and twice survived being shipwrecked." His achievements were great enough so that his family lived a lavish life.

One day, he left on a final expedition that he never came back from, to discover the legendary island Cocobolo. After a year without word from him, the emperor held a lavish funeral for him. Zheng would go on to learn that Liu Zhi had been becoming a very strange man: swimming in the sea for hours every day, trying to talk to whales, and discovered other things of the peculiar world that the normals around him deemed him crazy for.

Zheng[]

As a child, Zheng worshipped his father, but when his son was young, Liu Zhi left him to find an island called 'Cocobolo'. It is later revealed that Liu Zhi is none other than the island, as he was slowly turning into one throughout the years. Before he left his son, he warned him that one day, Zheng would 'suffer' a similar fate. Upon meeting his son many years later, when Zheng decided to find 'Cocobolo', Liu Zhi requested that Zheng stayed with him. Zheng became outraged and left the island, and decided to estrange his father. They reconcile after Zheng can no longer escape and deny his fate of turning into an island himself, and he feels shameful about how he treated his father. Liu Zhi, however, has never held it against him, as Zheng is his son.
