Gwendoline Petrel was the ymbryne of Julius Purcell, one of the seven prophesized light-eaters who could kill Caul.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
Miss Petrel would go through a Ymbryne Academy, and would take on the name Miss Petrel upon her graduation. At some point she would create a loop, with a light-eater named Julius Purcell eventually becoming one of her wards.
The Conference of the Birds[]
In the epilogue of the book, Miss Petrel is one of the ymbrynes Sophie calls with the message that Caul is back.
The Desolations of Devil's Acre[]
Miss Petrel and Julius arrived in the collapsed menagerie, where they met Sebbie Mayfield and Hadi Akhtar. A while after arriving at the loop, she went to help Sophie retrieve Hadi Akhtar, who had wandered off. However, they returned with just his burned sock, as he had been killed by a mine.
Before Miss Petrel and Miss Hawksbill were able to help guide Jacob, Noor, and the rest of the group back into the present with Miss Tern, they were all held up by a wight, a hollow, and Horatio in disguise. After killing the wight and ordering the hollow away, Horatio informs Miss Petrel that the wights had tracked her and says that he would explain later.
While guiding the children through 1916 war trenches and away from a powered-up Murnau, Miss Hawksbill and Miss Petrel in bird form both start harassing him, slowing him down to give the children time to reach the end of no man's land.
Death[]
Miss Petrel sacrifices herself when she dives at Murnau to hit him beak-first, and he catches her in his hand to crush her and throw her into the muck.
Description[]
Appearance[]
Miss Petrel wears a modest dress, has very intense eyes and her hair is very long, falling down to her knees "like a pair of wings at rest." Jacob could tell she was an ymbryne as soon as he first saw her.
Peculiarity[]
Miss Petrel is an ymbryne, meaning she can manipulate time, wipe memories, and turn into a bird, specifically a petrel.
