The Peculiar Children Wiki

Miss Wren's Menagerie for Peculiar Animals was Balenciaga Wren's original loop. The loop is believed to be the inspiration for one of the stories in the Tales of the Peculiar; a story about a giant named Cuthbert who lifted animals on top of a large mountain to protect them from hunters.

History[]

According to the Map of Days, the loop was the repetition of July 17, 1755. The loop was located in Western Wales. Miss Wren used the loop to house and protect peculiar animals, which were starting to decline in population. The wards lived in peace, though tragedy often broke the peace when some of the animals Miss Wren found died before she found them, or not long after.

First trilogy[]

Miss Wren would leave the loop right before the events of Hollow City. A couple days later, a hollowgast wandered into the loop. It was unable to get to the animals because they lived so high up, but was still very bothersome, according to Addison MacHenry. The hollow would be killed by Alma Peregrine's wards. After having a rest and discussing their next move in the menagerie, the group resolves to go to London to find Miss Wren, leaving Claire Densmore and Fiona Frauenfeld behind.

Wights, who had been tracking the kids since they left their loop, would raid the menagerie a couple hours after they left. While the inhabitants initially hid, the wights gassed them into the open. Deirdre the Emu-Raffe was shot and killed trying to stop the wights from raiding Miss Wren's house, Claire was kidnapped and Fiona fell down the side of the mountain. However, Fiona somehow survived the fall and was captured by the wights later on. After the wights left, Addison left as well, intending to track down Miss Wren.

Second trilogy[]

The rest of the animals were likely eventually relocated to Miss Wren's new menagerie.[1] It is unknown what exactly happened to the rest of animals between the time of Addison's departure and Miss Wren's arrival back, but Addison was able to leave before the original menagerie's collapse and he didn't seem too concerned, at least outwardly, about the rest of the animals.

Miss Grackle and her troupe of thespians did a production on Miss Wren and her menagerie, called The Grass Menagerie,[2] which was restaged in The Conference of the Birds and The Desolations of Devil's Acre.

Description[]

A very small house was perched on a very large tower constructed entirely from stacked-up railroad ties set smack in the middle of a grassy plateau. Around it on the plateau were scattered a few shacks and at the far end, there was a small patch of woods. There is a cemetery filled with the peculiar animals that died.
