Portal is a loop located in the town of Portal, Georgia. Many of its inhabitants are diviners. Portal is unique amongst loops as its former ymbryne made the entrance change location within the area every day.
History[]
The town is located halfway between Atlanta and Savannah, Georgia, and is allegedly named after the loop made there. The loop was made in the worst depths of the Great Depression[1] in spring 1930,[2] though when Jacob Portman and his friends first enter the looped town, Paul Hemsley says they are in 1935. The ymbryne who created the Portal loop was Miss Honeythrush,[1] but she was killed or forced to abandon the loop because of the Organization's persecution. As a result, Portal began using a loop-keeper.
A seventy-two hour lamb is roasted every day, made possible by the loop being made after the lamb had already been cooking for two days.[2]
A Map of Days[]
After learning that Jacob Portan and his friends are looking for a "portal," Paul tells them that his hometown is the town of Portal, with a loop nearby, and agrees to take them there.
Description[]
Portal has a loop entrance that moves around from day to day. In A Map of Days at the children's arrival, the loop entrance is located in a corn field and through a corn pyramid.
Inside, the town is three blocks from end to end, and looks as though it had been made entirely but expertly by hand, from the houses to the packed-dirt streets to the wooden sidewalks. Despite the Great Depression going on at the time, the town is neat, cheerful, and homey, with flowers planted and happy colors painted wherever it could be done, and the people are dressed well.[1]
