Sophie is a female peculiar who is the current owner of Pensevus the doll.
Biography[]
The Conference of the Birds[]
Sophie first appears, unnamed, in the epilogue (the first epilogue in the series). Her doll, Pensevus, begins whispering to her while she is asleep. When Sophie awakens, she makes calls to one loop each in America, Slovenia, the Andaman Islands, Namibia, Brazil, and Iran. When each of them is answered, she says, "He's back." In the next book, it is said that she also added, "Meet at the meeting place. Fast as fast can be."
The Desolations of Devil's Acre[]
At the meeting place of the seven light-eaters, Sophie goes to retrieve one of them, Hadi Akhtar, who had wandered out. She returns with Gwendoline Petrel with the news that Hadi had been killed (as well as the fact that three other light-eaters had been dead for years). Sophie introduces herself as the one who made calls to six ymbrynes, except for Velyana Greenshank, the ymbryne who had once been responsible for Noor Pradesh.
Pensevus whispers to Sophie, and she tells Noor that only one of the seven peculiars is all it takes to defeat Caul, with the other six being backups. She translates for Pensevus when he whispers that the light-eaters are supposed to eat Caul's soul, and when Noor expresses her doubt about the doll's words, Sophie scowls and says that Pensevus is more than just a doll.
Just before running from a giant Percival Murnau, Miss Petrel shoves Sophie at Jacob Portmen, telling him to take Sophie as Sophie wasn't part of Griselda Tern's loop and so could leave. Sophie rides one of Miss Tern's horses with Horatio. On the battlefield, Bronwyn Bruntley has everyone form a chain, and she picks up Sophie under one arm. The group manages to catch a train, on which Horatio tells Sophie that one of her phone calls had been intercepted by wights, who planned to track Noor to find the meeting place. Sophie hides her face in shame at this.
During the encounter with Caul, Sophie flings Pensevus at Caul's arm, protruding from his black puddle. The doll severs Caul's hand, freeing Julius from being strangled to death. In an overpass tunnel, Bronwyn and Sophie enter a rusted door into another passage third.
At a neglected park, Sebbie leans toward Sophie to ask Pensevus if the light-eaters have to eat Caul's soul-light. With a deserted look about her, Sophie says that Pensevus is asleep, possible forever. She shows everyone that he had been sliced open and lost stuffing. Noor asks if the doll is fixable, and Enoch O'Connor offers Sophie a handful of grass to stuff into Pensevus, but Sophie says that what Pensevus used to have inside him is gone and she doesn't know if he is fixable. Sophie later goes with Bronwyn, Sebbie and Julius to the safe house, and the four sneak from there into Devil's Acre.
Physical Appearance[]
Sophie wears a stained party dress and tall boots. She is constantly carrying around her doll, Pensevus, rarely letting him out of her grip.
