The Ymbryne Academy is a European school founded by Miss Avocet and Miss Bunting for training ymbrynes. All of Europe's ymbrynes were educated here for the past century and a half.[1] It is the only known formal training institution for ymbrynes, and it is unknown if there are similar schools outside of Europe.

Overview[]

The academy is extremely rigorous and unrelenting, with coursework taking ten years or longer depending on the student's aptitude. They would have to do an ambitious final thesis project and an apprenticeship under a working ymbryne to graduate, with the selected ymbryne usually being overtaxed in some way.

Only the best graduate from the school. Some students drop out after a short period, while others lack certain talents despite the work they put in. Students who failed would often go into a supporting role in a peculiar ministry.[1]

History[]

Before Miss Avocet and Miss Bunting[]

Nothing is known about any predecessors to Esmerelda Avocet and Miss Bunting's academy, but there may have been one.

Under Miss Avocet and Miss Bunting[]

At some point prior to July 17th, 1867, Miss Avocet and Miss Bunting founded the academy, with Miss Avocet being the primary teacher there.[2] Isabella Bird flunked out of the Ymbryne Academy in 1849,[3] which would mean at least more than two decades passed before the Academy became a loop if the Academy that Bird attended refers to Miss Avocet and Miss Bunting's. Though it's unknown if she actually attended the previous school or not.

One of the youngest students ever accepted at the school was Alma LeFay Peregrine,[2] who was recognized as a great talent at three years old.[4] The only known instance of non-ymbrynes coming to reside at the school was Alma's older brothers, Caul and Myron Bentham. They came with her to the academy as the older ymbrynes did not want to separate the siblings. It was a decision that the older ymbrynes would likely later regret. While Myron didn't hurt anyone at the school, Caul would abuse Alma, and both brothers would take what they learned at the Academy and use it in their later criminal activities.

Ten years before the events of Hollow City, a student named Olivia got into an accident that trapped her in her bird form. Although she was brought to Balenciaga Wren in the hope that Miss Wren could help her, it was too late to restore her to human form. Since Miss Avocet couldn't take care of an owl, she was transferred into Miss Wren's care and would reside in Miss Wren's menagerie.[5]

This school was presumably briefly closed by a wight attack and the abduction of Miss Avocet and Miss Bunting. It resumed after Caul's first fall, with some students assisting Miss Avocet in Devil's Acre.[6] After the death of Miss Avocet, the students would be transferred into Miss Peregrine's and Miss Cuckoo's school.

Despite being a co-founder, Miss Bunting is not mentioned in association with the academy after the first book in the series, and the section on the academy in Museum of Wonders opens by referring to it as Miss Avocet's. It is unknown what role she had at the time of Miss Avocet's death.

Under Alma LeFay Peregrine and Isabel Cuckoo[]

Sharing the role of Head Ymbryne, Alma and Isabel would take over the running of the school[7] in Alma's new loop, which was located on Cairnholm Island and on September 2nd, 1940. Not much is known about the school, but it is assumed that they would follow in their predecessors' footsteps.
